Hello!

Hi does anyone has a horse that changes mood in the full moon ?
Degas and other horses I had, changed mood and became more provocative.

I find my animals all get really silly, racing around the yard or paddock when there is a full moon! People get a bit silly when there is a full moon too, and more babies are born on full moons! Funny hey!

Yep, this is a funny thing. When I was young I used to work as a bar attendant. I found that we had to deal with more fights on full moons. People are funny creatures:-)

People and animals by the sounds of it Gen! My mum works in a nursing home and says it is bedlam on full moons! Funny :-)

My dog gets all fidgety, won't settle, and barks for no reason when it's a full moon, and the horses tend to spook more in the paddock and gallop about like mad things. And a friend of my sister who was a carer in a home for adults with mental health issues said they always had to put extra staff on during a full moon. The word 'lunatic' comes from lunar, so I guess there must be something in it.

Very interesting.
Mammals are made with about 80% of their bodies being fluid and the oceans are fluid.
Funny but the tides are also affected by the change in the lunar cycles....
I must do some more research... Thanks for bringing this up.
One of my grandsons is really affected by a full moon, he gets so excited, it is unbieveable, can't sit still and our youngest daughter is the same.
Me, calm, cool, collected not at all, YEA RIGHT. I'm the worst of them all.

Hi, I'm sorry to put a dampener on all this, but there are many myths about full moon behaviour! Studies at various hospitals have shown that there are no more babies born at a full moon than at any other time; humans have a tendency to remember things that confirm their beliefs. Again, because we expect different behaviours on a full moon our animals can respond accordingly so we create self fulfilling prophecies. Animals that are outdoors may respond to the very different light levels cast by a full moon. "Lunatic" does derive from the moon, but only because of outdated beliefs about mental health. I love all the romantic notions of the moon and it is my favourite time - a full mon - but sadly, it's all myth. While the bliefs are harmless in some ways, we need to be careful that we don't unfairly ascribe behaviours to people and animals and thus diminish their dignity.

Hello!

“Lunatico” in Italian simply means changing mood. As “Luna” means moon, of course it is related. But I personally don't see anything romantic nor taking away dignity from people or animals. I can observe my horse and donkey from the window of the house, so they don't see me and can't react to my “expectations”. I often realize, that my horse is more restless and slightly more aggressive. I am also sensible to the lunar phase, but not because I look at the calender, but I realize that it will be full moon because I am more nervous and tense .

If the moon doen not "affect" us or all mammals, why is there such a change in us and them.
I have observed this personally. And a young child of under four years of age does not read a callendar.
Also, it is a scientific fact that the tides are affected by the change of the lunar movements.
I live in a part of Canada that have the highest tides in the world and I see this every month.
As with cristina, I do not even know when the new moon is about to happen, unless I look at a callendar, which I don't do too often becuse my callendar does not have such things on it. It is homemade.
So what is the answer to all of this??? The cycle of live???
Simply as with everything on this forum, we all have our own opinions.
Thanks for asking this question, it has made me think....
For me that would be like saying women do not experience PMS, which is thought by some professionals as all in their heads. While science has shown it to be real.
Studies have also shown the affect of the luanar system DOES affect many things.....
Do more research, don't listen to just one opinion, get lots and make sure of your resourses....

There are many forces at work in our world which we do not fully understand, which why we have scientists to try and figure them out. I am not a person given to romatic notions and I like to have some kind of factual base to work from. I have only recently put two and two together and realised that the animal behaviour I was seeing was occuring around the time of the full moon. There very well may some kind of rational explanation which is not yet fully understood by science - the additional light that is created during night time has been suggested as a factor, for instance. Tomorrow is a full moon, and last night my normally placid dog woke me up four times in the night growling and barking and acting all restless. This is a dog who normally does not stir at all until I get up. I live in the South Island of New Zealand, where there is virtually no light pollution, it is very dark at night except around full moon. So perhaps it was the fact he could see outside more clearly and was disturbed by seeing night animals going about their business, I really don't know. But whatever the explanation, there is a definite change. I did not even know it was almost a full moon until I got up to quieten him down, it is not something I would bother to check on a calendar. Who is to say that horses are not more alert because they can see more clearly any movement at night during this time? I don't know the answer, I can only wonder. Either way, I don't believe it takes away the dignity of any animal or person to believe that the moon can have an effect in ways which we cannot understand, for which there is probably some scientific but as yet unproven rational explanation.

Interesting discussion. I am certainly effected by a full moon and feel excited and happy to see its brightness and sheer beauty so I imagine my animals are effected too. It is my favourite time of the month. A full moon reduces my worries and usually makes me feel content and happy. I just love to see it rising over the horizon. Maybe I am just a romantic and more sensitive to its influence. My husband is certainly not effected as he is very rational. So maybe only some people and animals are effected. This would tend to explain the different views expressed here too. However we feel lets hope the full moon is always there for us!
