About This Week’s Lesson

not joining up in the pasture

Hello!

My horse, Gomer (I did not name him) used to join up all the time and then stopped. He started to join up again and then began a bit inconsistant in the pasture with joining up. He may not always come to me but he doesn't run away. The other day when he didn't want to join up my cell phone went off. That cetainly made him and another horse curious and they were both at my side in seconds as soon as I turned my back to them and started to talk on the phone.

Some horses stop joining-up with their human because they become board with the same conversation that is communicated over and over again. But when your horse sees you, does he walk half way then stop? Mine tend to do that and to me it's saying that they want me to carry out my part. But you know how the Indians captured their ponies right. The advance and retreat technique. To me Join-Up has similar motions. Like when Monty can't get a horse to Join-Up but the horse is paying attention. When the horse runs, or in the Join-Up case looks away, up move towards them. And as soon as they turn around, or look towards you, you turn and walk away. You could also think of it as the push and pull of a magnet.

My gelding and mare tend to be a little hard to catch also. I walk toward them, and just before they turn away, i lower my eyes and pivet across in front of them and take a few steps away. I stop for a moment, then turn back towards them slowly looking right at them. I repeat the process and usually within a few minutes they let me approach them, or they start approaching me. I hope this helps.
