Dually training

Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed

Hi, I have posted a video on youtube showing me and my brumby gelding Buster during his second session with his Dually halter. I cringe to watch it because not only is the quality pretty bad (i should have listened to my hubby who told me to buy a GOOD video camera but i bought a cheapy and it shows!..darn it!) but i can see sooooo many times where i could have done things different. That is the beauty of videoing yourself. Even if you never post it for others to see, you can learn so much about your own body language flaws, or strengths! Flaws in my case! I Hope someone can learn something from my mistakes and thanks to buster for being such a forgiving pony!
You will hopefully find it under 'Busters Dually session 2' or my channel is Nelliebell2ponies. I don't know how to post a link on here sorry!

Hi Nellie,
sorry, but it does not work for me to find you on youtube. Over Busters Dually session 2 you will only find something about cars (I don't think your horse is a car!?).
Posting a link is so easy here! You only have to copy the link and work with copy and paste!

Giving nelliebell a hand here. :) (I hope you don't mind!)

Search for Nelliebell2ponies at YouTube and you will find the correct vid. (Unless it's a "country setting" or some such thing that makes it fail.)
.
Thanks for sharing the vid, Nellie! Looks great!

Nelliebell - what a smashing boy he is. He looked like he was really concentrating on what he was being asked to do and was very attentive to you. You looked really calm too!

Thanks for sharing your video. lizzie

Kicki...thanks! don't mind at all! I'll get round to learning about posting links someday! although when someone posts a link on here my computer doesn't recongnise it...do you know how i can fix that? Glad you liked the Vid :-) Will hopefully have a better camera for when i start him under saddle!

Lizzie, I am a bit biased but i too think he is a pretty handsome boy! He really tries hard to listen and do what is asked of him.

Jasmine, hope you a found a way to view it :-)

Hello!

Hi Nelliebell, it's great to see you on the forum sharing your work with Buster. I hope you don't mind but I thought I'd give you a couple of tips to help you with your dually work. When you want him to back up make sure your eyes are looking up and directly to where you want him to go. When you look down, your body language is passive. The opposite is the case when you want him to come towards you. Make sure you don't look him in the eye, try looking somewhere down around his knees. We want our horse to see us as a leader so when you are leading him don't look back at him. Walk positively and look where you are going. If you are confident in what you are doing he will be more willing to follow along. I want to congratulate you on choosing to start your Brumby using Monty's methods. You're doing a brilliant job. Well done!

Hi Nellie again!
.
Kicki, thank you for the link. I tried it, but I have to say that it only shows a black picture to me and a sign saying "Sorry, but this video is not available in your country, because it may contain music that is not allowed by the GEMA".
.
So, I have tried it, but there is no more hope for me to see it, sorry Nellie! I really would have loved to watch it, because I have recently done my Introductory Course here in Germany and am now practicing these things over and over again for my field study. Would have been a good thing to me to see how other students are learning these concepts!
.
Love

Hi Lynn! Great to see you on here! Will take on board what you have suggested about my eyes etc and hopefully next time will be much improved! I am glad i had a video taken of it or i would not have realised. Such a simple thing can make a big difference!
Thanks!
Janelle

Jasmin, i am thinking i will change the music to a youtube approved song then you shouldn't have a problem :-)

Lynn's advice is really on the money. I know that when I backed up my boy (for rearing) I wasn't sure whether to do the 'eyes on eyes' and I'm sure I didn't look where I wanted him to go as I was stressed because he'd reared up!

It's so useful to be reminded how and where to look. I know also that when I was trying to get him to follow and he wouldn't come with me I should have pressed on ahead and acted more like a leader. It's so difficult to remember everything when you're 'in the moment' isn't it?

I know I will try my hardest to remember Lynn's advice when I do some training with Smokey and the gang this weekend.

Thanks Gen

Buster has settled in here so well. With our abundant grass he is in probably too good condition though! But i do like to see a bit of weight on going into the cooler months :-) Stinking hot here at the moment though! So much improvement to be made on my Dually skills but lucky for me he is very forgiving!

Thank you for the video. We should put more videos on Youtube...
I find interesting that the right side of the horse is much more sensitive, probably because so far most manipulations have been done from the left side.

Nellie... about this: "when someone posts a link on here my computer doesn't recongnise it...do you know how i can fix that?"
Do you mean that they aren't active links? If so, you have to copy and paste them in the browser bar.

@renjaho
I'm sorry you can't see it! It's so weird that I can see it just fine in Sweden when you can't in Germany.

Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed

Hi Rudi, yes his off side is a lot more sensitive than the near side. I am trying to do a bit more work on that side to even it up a bit!

Kicki, No the links are not active so i will try the copy past thing, thanks! :-)

Hi Janelle - Just noticed in Monty's Newsletter that Lyn Mitchell has just finished writing a series of articles on Wild Brumbies which have been published in the September, October and November issues of the "Tamworth Local Horse Magazine". You may care to check these out given you own Buster - I gather they are on the internet. I am hoping to do so myself as soon as I can find the time.

Thanks for that Maggie :-) I will have a look.

Hi all, I had another go with the Dually today and i tried very hard to put into practice what Lynn said about where i was looking. I think it went much better. Sorry i had no one to video it for me though :-( I think i was maybe asking him to back up too much last time aswell. He is a good boy and tries real hard so i don't want it to seem as if he is being scolded for something. So today i concentrated on getting a few steps with as least amount of pressure as possible. I had to remind myself a few times to look where i wanted him to go when backing and go passive when coming forward...I have a bad habbit of looking at his feet when backing to see how many steps we are doing...going to kick that habbit in the butt!
All in all it was a much better effort and we are getting very close to that 'sweet spot' Will try and get a vid next time :-)

I loved watching your video of you and Buster working, Janelle. Thanks so much for posting it and thanks to your Mum too - she did a great job. He looks like a great little horse and is so responsive to you. He has obviously been handled much more on the near side than the off side but congratulations for calmly working on him so that he could handle the lunge rope over his body on the off side too. You did great and even better yesterday by the sound of things once you took everyone's comments on board. They were great comments. It is so exciting for you to be starting on this big journey with Buster. Monty's book and videos etc are fantastic but given you are in Tassie you may also have access to Tom Roberts's book "Horse Control - The Young Horse" printed by Griffen Press. It should be available in any Horselands or other horsey store or can be easily ordered by them. I first bought it years ago when I purchased my first young mare and couldn't put it down! When I broke Tricka in and started my big journey with her I used this book as my manual. Tricka and I went Chapter by Chapter through it with great results. I wasn't a member of Monty's Uni at that stage and although I had read "The Man Who Listens to Horses" and "Shy Boy" I had no idea of the extent of his methods and teaching. Now that I am a Monty convert, read "From my Hand to Yours" and watched most of his videos I still appreciate Tom Roberts's work and they tend to mesh nicely together. One thing that I really value from Tom Roberts is the idea of always finishing your lesson on a good note amd his ideas of "that will profit you" and "that will profit you not". If the session becomes somewhat challenging with new learning then persist with the session until you get the required response then "end of lesson". Knowing when to stop a lesson is important. I always try to follow up a more challenging sessions with a shorter, easier session on the same thing the following day. Tom Roberts has two other Books "Horse Control - the Rider" and " Horse Control and the Bit" but the one above is the best. I am really enjoying noting your progress with Buster!
