My Join-Up® Experience

Help!!

Please upload your photo

After reading Monty's & Kelly Marks' books, I'm really keen to try a JoinUp with my horse. The only thing that's holding me back is what if I do it wrong? I don't expect to be perfect the first ( or second or third) time, but I need reassurance that I'm not going to hurt Millie by making a mistake. Would I do any psychological damage, or confuse her? I've practised the angles and positioning on my friends and family, but I need to be sure that I won't hurt Millie before I try it on her! Any help appreciated!

Hi ksalih21!
Instead of being afraid to do something wrong, trust your horse to tell you when you do it right! You've been working with Millie on an intuitive base until now, maybe you did something right and didn't even know it. If it worked for the two of you,it couldn't have been so wrong. Your horse knows her own language, trust her to show you when you communicate with her in her language. I do remember how my first Join-up surprised me, because it worked!

Hello!

Hi ksalih21.
The books do give u the feeling to go out there and try which is great, but I think it is good that u are thinking it over so carefully. Miriam is totally right, your horse will show u when u r doing things right. There r a lot of signs to look out for and I think it is important to be sure of what u r doing to make your horse feel comfortable and see u as his comfort zone. If u feel too unsure about doing it on your own the first time I would recommend to get someone to help u who has got experience.

My personal opinion is that you can't learn the technique only from books. You need somebody who is training you.

Thanks all, I really do want to have a go, and I've booked a day with a trainer, who is something of an expert in this field! He's going to show me what I need to be looking for to accomplish JoinUp, and also schooling in a Dually (surely the best piece of kit ever??!!). I'll let you know how it goes!
