Join Up Help Needed

Hello!

Hi All,
I got a 14 yo QH that was used for roping. He is quiet and stops readily. I had to work hard to get him to longe and always need two whips/training sticks, as it is hard to get him to do anything other than stop and face me. After free longeing he does follow me around. Then I signed up for Equus Uni so I could learn more. I tried Join Up using the long lines from the online store. The first time I tried Join Up I got him to move away (never more than a trot) and got follow-up. But the second attempt seemed to regress. He is unfazed by the flapping lines, even if they touch him. Actually, he seems unfazed by most things. I have made a lot of progress getting him to move out of my space with a very light touch. Does Join Up have to be done with only a rope or line? Should I use the same tools I use when I free lunge him? Any advice or comments appreciated. ~CJ

Hi CJ. What is it you want to achieve? You have an older boy here who seems to be very accepting of your involvement in his life. He readily 'Joins up' & gives you follow up. If I were dealing with him I would go down 1 of 2 routes, depending on his communication. Either press on with a better 'Join up' but using a cane with lots of long, billowing plastic. If he finds that a bit spooky use the cane at a greater distance or bump it off the saddle if he is ignoring the stimulie. Alternatively, if his communication was good enough I would press on with the journey - not worry about the detail of the 'Join up' but accept that he has accepted leadership & progress to new challenges. At 14 he has much life experience but will still appreciate new ones. Have fun. Cheers, Jo.

Hello!

Thanks Jo! We got him while I was recovering from an accident and he took the opportunity to usurp leadership a bit. Since I have been able to start working with him, things are better. But I thought I should just start at the beginning with Join-Up, as it has been recommended even for people who have had their horses for a long time. Thanks for the great reply. It was very helpful and clear! CJ
