Join Up in Small Square Corral?

Please upload your photo

I am just beginning the Online University and am only on the second Join Up lesson ( I also have NO horse experience whatsoever) but I have a question. On our farm we do not have an arena but we have a corral. Can join up be done in a square corral?

Depends on how small the corral is and the size of your horse. For an average horse it needs to be at least 15 metres in width - a larger would be better. If you place a rail across each corner you could turn it into a rounder area and this will prevent your horse from running into the corners. However this is not necessary - your horse should circle around you anyway. Good luck with it and welcome to the Uni and forum!

matermaus,
If you watch Rudi's video, a member of the UNI. He does not have to use a round pen in working with a group of horses and does a great job.
Proving one does not need a round pen to work with horses if you do not have one.
As maggie says, welcome and you can do it !!!

Hi matermaus and welcome to the uni,

Watch "Big Brown" on the uni, its great for showing that you can join up in a square arena.

I joined up with my two in a paddock, it was a lot of leg work, but a great way to lose weight.lol.
Good luck

Once you have joined up in an enclosed area it is great fun trying it in a paddock. Well done Sandra it does sound hard work to start that way! If Tricka ever shows any bossy tendencies towards me in her paddock I can now just send her out and make her join up. My Uggs done always done this. He was ostensibly broken in via a Monty Robert's methods but I have often doubted how much his trainer really new about Monty.
