My Join-Up® Experience

Join Up with a Mini!

Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed

Did Join up with my daughters Mini pony yesterday....was a sucess!
My only queery is that he didn't lower his head completely to the ground. I got all other 3 gestures very quickly and he seemed keen to turn to me (i had sent him the correct distance so didn't want to keep pushing for the head) so i tried for a join up and voila i got it and follow up. So i was pretty pleased. I have had a few months without a horse since my last one died and i wasn't sure if i had gone a bit rusty! I had been putting off attempting join up incase i failed but thought 'here goes!' I have my brumby arriving in 2 weeks so i need the practice...even if it is on something so tiny. I had also been a bit apprehensive how i would go with a mini as my last horse was a mountain of a thing, but just goes to show an equine is an equine no matter the size!

Nice job. You don't need to see all three signs that your horse wants to join up. The most important sign is there willingness to come to you and follow up. As Monty demonstrates it is 5 laps in each direction, then you change direction one more time and begin looking for the physical signs for join up. I have noticed that Monty will take the horse around a few more laps after he sees all three signs before he attempts to join up.
Let us know how it goes with your new horse. You know you have the skills, just believe in yourself and be patient and calm.

Cheers

Well done,
Great job and it must have been sweet to see that litte one going around that pen. They are so cute.
You're not going to get rusty, you will continue to do great with your brumby.
You have a great day,
Ronda

Ronda, it was so lovely to see such a tiny pony doing all the things my big thouroughbred used to! just in miniature form!! I am really looking forward to getting my brumby and starting another journey. Our little mini will be good practice :-)

Hi Janelle
.
That is so cute, good on you :-) With the lowering of the head, the instructor at the intro course said that sometimes you may not get all four signs. But I thought that maybe because the mini is so small, the lowering of her head may have been so subtle it was not noticed.
.
Yep, an equine is definately an equine no matter how big or small :-)

Hi Gen

Yes he is a very cute mini too! A leopard Appaloosa with the hugest fringe and mane you have ever seen! I will keep in mind what you said about the head and pay more attention next time :-)

Hello!

Minis have a perfect self confidence, an extra large understanding, I breed them and they are teaching me every day some magic about life, mini donkeys as well... try!

Hi Sylvie
How lovely that you breed these wonderful ponies! We bought our little boy off a breeder where my husband asked her why she chose to breed mini's? Her response?...because she loves them! I can understand why :-) You are right that they have a perfect self confidence and i am sure when doing join up with him that he had a super understanding of what was happening.I think people go wrong with them when they treat them as an oversize dog. Many of my friends have said that about mine...i am quick to remind them he IS a horse still! I think there is much to learn from something so small :-) Mini Donkeys! They are beautiful!
Cheers
