Lesson suggestion

Hello!

I would like to suggest a lesson on training the heavier type horse/pony such as a cob or Highland.

I have found in my years that a TB for example will be forward going however the heavies are gentle and won't or really don't see the point in running in many circles on a pair of long lines. They will also trip if they are not helped early on to use their hindquarters rather than stay on the forehand due to their massive shoulders.

So it's how to start and get a very gentle kind horse going And to get the pony off the forehand using itself correctly.

I start my Highlands with your methods and enjoy the uni lessons it all goes well. However this year I have bought a bent branderup book again no cruelty no violence and I find it is helping my highland and me to keep her up and together. She us only three so early days and why it was a good time to ask what and how you would do things with a heavy horse or pony.

I have seen the lesson with Martin Clunes Clydesdales but I feel that it does not answer my questions about actual riding and keeping a heavier type light to ride. Many of us with back issues chose to ride the heavier types for comfort and it is so important for all our sakes and health of the pony that we keep them light in front. I see many cob types heavy in the hand heads pulled into their chest and powering away pulling the riders arms and I feel sorry for both.

I love your way of training I have learnt so much following your training and meeting you at a demo that I wish I had trained all my horses over the past 30 years your way. As you say one lifetime to learn and another to do it right would be a blessing. Many thanks for reading this request.

Hi Yvonne

What a great suggestion, and a lovely message to Monty, thanks for sharing it. I had never heard of Brent Branderup so good to learn something new.

Bent Branderup is a Danish gentleman and the "grand master" of Academic Riding here in Europe. :)
For those of you who haven't heard of him, you can learn more about him here:

.
Incidentally, Academic Riding usually fits the horses of a coldblooded persuasion very well.
