loading in a float??

Hello!

hello all, i would like to see a lesson on loading our beloved horses into a float. it seems that it is a topic in which there are so many right (in the eyes of the people telling me)ways to get a horse to load. from putting rope across behind the legs to dragging it and even to tapping it on the back every time it tries to walk back out?? my wife and i have two hesitant yet willing horses that will ponder at the ramp then walk in but done like to stand for any more than 20 to 30 second before coming back out. we are patient and load stand unload then repeat to keep the horse calm, and would like to know if this is a good practice and if there are any other things which may help. i believe that food in a float is a quick fix to a problem and refuse to use it. i am sure that other people are having the same problem. cheers and keep up the great lessons.

Hello!

Personally, I think food doesn't work long term as a bribe but it's great as a 'pleasant association'. I always make sure my horses have a nice net of hay in the lorry waiting for them and then the important thing is to drive them carefully. Yes, they've got to understand pressure and release but ultimately, as Monty always says, you want the horse to want to do it. One of my horses got loose at a show once and ran straight and got in his lorry as he saw it as the most comfortable place I guess!

Look for the clip of Monty loading with the use of his Dually Halter. It is awesome. The trick is to have heaps of time up your sleeve to practice getting them on and then off again a fair few times. He always ends up loading seemingly 'unloadable' horses. Good luck.

Another way to use food as a 'pleasant association' is to serve the horses their lunch in the trailer for a week or whatever amount of time it takes. I have seen great results with that method. :)
