Hi all,  just returned from vacation to a sick horse.  The vet gave us a  diagnosis of EMS.  Restricting to hay, equalizer versus grain and on thyroxine and bite.  I am wondering what tips, supplements etc., others have used to manage this disease in their horses.  It has been sudden and unusual situation since he has been in with a Cushings mare who is 32 years old and not affected or ill.
Thanks Leanne

Sorry about this. You might find a Davis forum to chat with owners too.

Hi Leanne, late to the forum as have only just joned the Monty Roberts Uni. I hope your horse has improved. I have managed a horse with EMS for 5 years. As the link suggests weight mangement and exercise is the answer including a low glucose diet, muzzling when grass is likely to be high in glucose (spring and beginning of autumn) also grass is known to be higher in sugars when frosty so avoid turn out then. My horse is also on Metformin, a medication used for human diabetes. Recommended by the Newmarket Equine Hospital although there arent many published results on its effectiveness I have successfully avoided a return of laminitis which occured prior to my horse's initial diagnoses of EMS. Good luck.

Thank you everyone! We have his situation under control with careful hay rationing in slow feeder nets, dry lot and supplement ( Amino Trace and Equalizer].  We have been through several rounds of hoof abscesses since the change in his status but (knock on wood) he is coming sound again with limited rotation due to the EMS associated episode.  Now back to learning together!
