Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed 200 lessons completed

I have a 6 year old mare I have been tranning. and the pass couple of ride she dose not want to back up and just throw her head everywere and avoid the bit. So today I look in her mouth and felt her gums on her lower jaw it looks and feel like she is getting a Canine teeth on her left side. It has not broke throw the gums yet but u can feel it and see the little bump were the tooth is. Is it normal for her to still be getting teeth at 6 years old?? I had her teeth checked by the vet 3 months ago about. This is the first young horse I have ever had. So Im not sure if this is normal?? THANK U for all ur help!!!

Hi
call your vet to reexamine your horses mouth. Has your horse had her teeth floated and realigned? It sounds like it may be a wolf tooth that is trying to break through that is bothering her. If your vet did not float her teeth and she has never had her teeth floated, you need to find a vet that knows dental work on horses. All horses develop spur on their teeth from grinding their food. The spurs can be large enough to cause pain in the cheeks and they do not chew their food correctly.
Head tossing is the first indicator of a tooth problem.

Cheers

Hi
I have never known a horse that could go 6 years without having their teeth worked on. If you really want to check you can run you hand in her mouth and check the top of the molars If she does not need her teeth floated the teeth should be smooth and flat across the top. If you feel any sharp edges that will indicate that her teeth need work

I'm going to do that when I go out side to feed them tonight I'm going to do it to both my horses. I had a different mare who never had her teeth done and ill 25 year of her life I did not think it was right I took her to everyone and specialist and her teeth were fine. But I'm going to make sure and check both my horses teeth tonight. I'll let u know what I find.. thank u

Hi
Sounds like you have some amazing horse. Unfortunately for me I have to have my horses teeth floated once a year. If the teeth are good does the bit and bridle fit correctly? Most horse are trying to tell you something when they toss their head. The trick is to figure out what it is.
Cheers

I need to figure it out I switch bits many times I have change headstalls lighter one vs heavier ones. I make sure the bits fits in her mouth right. I move it up and down sometime to see if that fixes any thing she were she likes it more at in her mouth. I just wish they could tell u want is wrong with them so we did not have to play this guessing game tell we get it right. She was bet before I got her they hit her in the face I could not even touch her face. And she had marks all over her body. We have came a long way And trust me 100% she is my baby and she know ill keep her safe. So I wound of her being bit has anything to do with it.

Wow! That is so sad that someone hit your horse in the face. To me that would be the starting point for me. Watch the video on the CENTAUR SERIES which is the last few videos. That poor horse was so head shy and distrustful of anyone touching her. Monty tried another technique to overcome her freight.. It might work for you as well.

It is wonderful to know that people like you will take on a horse that has been abused. It takes a lot of patience and caring to do that. The only thing worse than abusing animal is the horrible abuse that women and children are subjected to.

Good luck and best wishes

Hi barner and Dennis,
All of us being in Monty's Uni and knowing the amazing things he achieves when working with abused horses, I'd like you to consider the times Monty managed to make the violator see that there is a way out of violence. Monty describes familysituations where the parent came to one of his demonstrations around the world, together with the child or other victim.
Seeing what can be done in the absence of violence can make the difference for some of them.
One situation saved is the world of difference for those people. I understand your emotional reaction, bbarner, but I hope that Monty and all of us students can make that difference.
Thank you for taking in an abused horse and be his safetyzone!
Miriam
