Mustang Bolts In-Hand...I'm so sore...

Hello! I am new to the Uni but not to horses. I adopted 2 mustang geldings last year. One of them is coming along famously. The other...meh. I recently brought in a new mare who is here for training and now my mustang has decided that his new fun trick is to bolt while he is being led. I tried using a longer line in order to give him to run room but to no avail. He hits the end of the line and broncs it out until I have no choice but to let go. Then back to the herd he goes. I need help.

Welcome Daniel! You are wise to have a longer line in hand. Monty uses one of the 30 foot lines for this purpose. Sounds like you understand the game of "who ever moves the feet first" loses :)
Training with the Dually Halter will indeed go a long way to solving this remedial issue. Banjobarb is so right!

I have to say, this horse makes me feel like I know nothing. Like I have zero business owning horses, nevermind training. 😩 I have spent some time "ignoring" him while I study some of Monty's techniques and videos and do some more learning about this issue. I do not want it to continue long term and turn it into a habitual behavior. I have watched the dually halter videos and many others. So I think my frustration level and thinking brain are readjusted and I can try to work with him again.

Hi Daniel. There's an old saying in show business - never work with children or animals. No, I've never worked with mustangs but I've used the Dually for many years & find it an invaluable tool. However, cherry picking is a less successful way to progress - I advocate you use Join up & the Dually. Join up will cause this horse to pause in his rebellion long enough for you to show yourself to be worthy of his trust. Keep that advantage throughout his training, ensuring that each task is sufficiently incremental for him & you will have a real success story on your hands. Good luck. Jo.
