My Join-Up® Experience

My horse follows me around the field with no head collar when i show affection!

Hello! 100 lessons completed

My irish draft 2 year old gelding wren is such a softy. I have done some work with him well actually it was for 5 minues and only done once with asking him to come to me, i stood infront of him waggling the rope gently and moving my legs up and down looking like a right prat but i was making it up as i was going along really, and wiggling my finger towards me, i was just playing really but it worked, so i took his head collar off and did it again and he walked right up to me, now everytime i go in the field and i walk up to him and give him a stroke for a while i then walk off and he follows me every where, away from the herd, across the field, back he stops when i stop, i believe we have something very special. Ive only had him for 3 months! He was very head shy and nervous and no good with rugs but ive fixed that already. With his head collar and rug i let him sniff it hen rug it all over him slowly then started to rustle it a bit and make noise with it now he is fine with everything. He does still stick his head right up when trying to get a head collar on but I'm working with that, he's 15hh now and im 5'4 tall so hopefully we'll sort that before he gets much taller.

Anyway I thought I'd just share that with you

xx

i got a 15month old gelding from sales looking like a coat rack and completely wild in sept 2010.we left him alone with another pony that is very friendy. i went in to feed and water and poo-pick for a few weeks.then i made a round pen of sorts with electric fencing (not electrified)got him in there and tried join up with no real idea of what i was doing.he locked his ear on....made his circle smaller...lowered his head...licked and chewed...but wouldn't follow me.then i helped a friend take her pony to a monty roberts demo.he was chosen for kelly marks to work with.it was amazing! so i took what i had learnt back to my baby boy.i tried join up with my other 2 ponies with great sucsess and then tried the baby. he wouldn't go away whatever i tried.so i contacted a friend who has done the courses and asked her what i was doing wrong.she said she thought he was already joined up and to move up to next lesson and see how he went.he has been completely trusting of me with leading ..picking his feet up...playing with a gym ball..plasics on a stick.we have a great bond...all thanks to the monty roberts way(even though i didn't really know what i was doing at the start!)i'm totally convinced this is how we should teach our horses.....because it works! had to share as so pleased with the change in all 3 of my ponies.even my 12yr old is better now.and she was good to start with but had small problems...like stepping away from mounting block as you put foot in stirrup!yried the monty roberts lesson and now she stands still until you ask her to move!
