My Join-Up® Experience

New Filly Need Help

Hello!

I just purchased my first horse and she is 2. She is currently in training under saddle and will be arriving in 2 weeks. Myself and my husbands daughter plan on doing Monty Roberts Join up and ground work but I also have a couple of girls who would also like to help out with her training. Is it better to keep her ground work to a minimum with just my husbands daughter and I ? Or is it better with her having more people around? To get her used to it?

It depends on what their training philosophies are, I would not want someone training my horse if I thought they might be undoing the good work that I'm trying to do. It would be confusing to the horse and could potentially create problems. If it were me, I prefer to keep other people out of my training.

I wouldn't mix in lots of new people for say the first month or so.
The horse needs to "land" in her new home and get acquainted and feel safe with you before more new people is thrown into the mix.
I don't mean to isolate yourself with her. I'm sure they can be around and groom her and such, but I think you will benefit from keeping her close the first period to make sure she bonds with you two.
.
The first couple of weeks are critical and you will be able to do a lot of ground work while she is still new at the place and "feeling the waters" so to speak. After the "honeymoon" she might start to try out new things to see how far she can go.

I agree. She needs to get to know you before anyone else, to avoid confusion. You 2 need to be able to bond with her without interference. There is plenty of time later on for new people. I am with Klienne, I prefer to do my own training. Other people can be a distraction and send mixed messages to the horse, as well as get in my way.

Hi,
When you train a horse, you need to be consistent. To many persons doing to many different things will just confuse this baby. At the beginning, let this filly land in her new house. After a while, other people may join, but be sure everybody uses the same methods for training. if you are ready to share the training, it's a good opportunity to teach Monty's principles to these girls, and you can check training is consistent. But here's no necessity for the filly to have so many persons involved in the training.
