I was just wondering, after someone has become a certified instructor, what would be the next step? How would they make themselves known?

Hi Horse addict,
From what I have seen and heard, the name of new Certified Instructors will appear on Monty's website, often being published in the weekly newsletter. The idea is ofcourse that you return to your own country/ surroundings, after finishing the internship. Coming home, you might find the horses and their owners, with whom you worked as an advanced student to still be at your side, promote your work and even want to become your students. This actually is the first time you're able and allowed to teach Monty's principles and give courses like "Join-up", "Longlining" ,etc, and the Introductory Course. You will have to find your own students, still I think that the organisation will promote you wherever they can. Whatever "problem-horses" seek you, they will be your best advertisement.
Whenever there is a tour of Monty's in your country, you will be able to tour with him, even help organize it and get to know a lot of future-clients. Monty askes his Instructors in the roundpen at Demos, to either school horses or show their own skills.
I hope this gives you some idea of what the start of a Certified Instructor might look like, you could also write some of the newer ones an e-mail and ask them to describe their start.
Maybe we'll see you one day as a CI answering questions like the one you just posted!
Keep working on it,
Miriam

I know one of them, since he came back to France after becoming a certified instructor. The first time we met was during a demo near the town of Toulouse, where he helped Monty in his tour in France, it was in 2008.

I know that he is working everywhere in France, he's got
clients all over the country and I am one of them. He comes
regularly (about once a month) to school our 2 mares and we really enjoy working with him. He does a very good job with our horses.

It is wonderful to study on the UNI but it is still better
to have an instructor like him coming home and showing you
how to deal with your horses and the right things to do. For our mares, he did the join-up himself and he is a guide for us. We always keep in touch through phone and mail and when I have a doubt or a problem to solve with my horses, I never hesitate to ask him !

great answers! Hi Miriam, I hope to be an instructor too. Right now, I'm trying to find a job so I can earn some money to take an introductory course. Might take a while.

The concept in training a horse to do anything is pressure and release. So if you request your horse to back and he is having a difficult time doing this you put pressure on him to back and when he takes the first complete step back release the pressure and bring him forward. The release is the reward for the horse. Watch the videos on any of the ground work Monty has demonstrated and you will understand the methods.
Also horses don't like to backup because the cannot see behind themselves so start backing the horse at an angle so he can see where he is going, then when he is good doing that you can strt to straiten the backup. Don't just back your horse either. If you repeat the exercise too much he will get sour

Cheers

Hi - can i reverse the original question. How do you find a certified instructor in your own locality? I'd love to find one. It all seems to work out ok from the videos, but a real human input would be good. I tried out the dually on saturday and was well pleased but i don't think it's something that is instantaneous. With some time over several days or weeks i can see how Kara will begin to respond to it. She seems to have got the idea of giving in to the pressure and then i remove the pressure. If i back her up - should i bring her forward after releasing the dually??

Hi Stephen,
What you describe sound very good to me, seeing the value in having a life person at your side to help you and your horse, is a great step at any level of training! You would try to find a riding- instructor to improve the riding-performance of both yourself and your horse.
The same thing goes for the comunication your learning in the language Equus.
I don't know where you live, but you can go to the "Certified Instructors" on Monty's website and see if you find someone near you. If you're in the UK, there might be a "recommended associate" of Kelly Marks' Intelligent Horsemanship in your area.
To go into your question, I suggest you separate your asking to back-up from asking her forward on the Duallyhalter. Give your horse the time to realise that she found the right answer to your demand, repeat it, so it becomes natural and then go to the next item. Repetition can be boring, so no more than 3 times should be enough if she did what you asked.
Should she not get what you want of her, make it easier, maybe smaller steps that lead to the desired result. Monty says, that if you it right, repetition is your best friend. If you do it wrong it can be your worst enemy. To let a lesson settle in, give Kara 3 seconds before asking for the next one. Breathe out and confirm that you're happy with what she responded.
Hope this asnwers your question,
Miriam

Thanks Miriam. I've found Caroline Jennings in Ireland and sent her an e mail.I like the quote about GOOD repetition - Hopefully I'm doing it right. Kara does seem to be getting the hang of it.The others at the stables seem to wonder what this new guy, that doesn't know anything about horses is playing at - but I intend to persevere. Thanks again Stephen
