She bites my butt

Hello!

I am working with a 4 year old quarter horse mare. My cousin has been trail riding with her, but has moved her to board at my friend's house where I can do lots of ground work with her to improve her manners and desensitizing. Her legs are no problem when touched by hands, the rope, and just about everything else. Yet, she does not give her feet up easily to have them picked and often on her front LEFT leg, she will reach back and try to bite my butt. Thankfully she has net yet been successful. I have done successful Join-Up with her and she responds well to most other training. Any suggestions?

A second person could school her with the Dually when we wants to turn her head.

Hello!

I have had similar issues of not giving the feet easily. The mare I have been working with is 4 also. It hit me when Monty said 'who has control of the feet...' my mare lacks complete trust. She also was very stubborn backing in the roundpen (trailors and alleyways she did great). She started intimidating the ferrier. I tried working with the dually and had a second person to work with the feet and wasn't getting the results I wanted. We schooled in the roundpen and started with backing that day since I didn't have a second person. I used the dually halter of course. We go a few laps both ways in the roundpen to warm up. I have her whoa and I call her to the center of the roundpen for a rub, then we worked on backing. If she got out of line I told her no in a firm voice and made her run with changing direction every lap or so (no anger very calm allowing her to choose). I had her whoa and call her into the center, give her a rub and try again. It took a few times to get it and the triple bonus is she accepts the dually now for schooling and she is doing great now with backing then I took her in the alleyway to groom her and asked for her feet. They came pretty easily. I did get to pick her hooves. I did have her tied with lots of slack in the leadrope and she could have bit me if she wanted. I noticed when Monte worked with the feet in join up it was to the end. I have been waiting to the end of our 'school' to continue to build on her feet. I hope it helps. I liked hearing you are working on ground manners! I have been doing that also but did I hear right that you can ride her? My mare was barely halter broke when I started in July. Our riding season is coming to and end. I feel succesful in that we are having fun while working hard. After getting some of the feet issues worked on I felt more confident to get on her and ask her to move forward. As for the left leg watch Monte's video on leads. Could there be a connection? She could always start with the left. Could that be why she is unruly with that leg? Just a thought.
