Hi everyone! I am new here an just started to try MR training. It works quite well but, now i have a mare that is very spooky when touching her. I did join upp and she walks over wooden panel and over the longlines betwen a holeway without a lot of fear. I can touch her with the "Hand" and nearly alover with my hands.always a litle tens. I tryed with the stick and the plastik nur she is so terrified that she is shaking when rubbing her with it. It is ok on the vither but nowherales. And i cant stop her with the Dually then. To her, I started her last year for 1 month very slowly and she grow up at our farm but like the wildhorses up in the mounten just in winter a litle bit near for the feeding( we are in Iceland). I am thankful for any suggestion or advice. I hope you understand my writing!!!! Thanks

Hi Merle. Welcome! Your writing is very good - much better than my Icelandic! I have 5 ponies, ranging from 11 years to a 9 month old filly. She was home bred, as was my 23 month old colt. Hopefully, I can make useful suggestions. Firstly, how many 'Join ups' has your mare done? Just one is not enough but you won't need more than 4 to 6 until you gain her trust. Regarding spooky when touched, start with just a stick with a padded end to ensure she has a pleasant experience. If she is tense then put your hand further up the stick to shorten it. At her withers, scratch until she relaxes & then take away the stick for at least 3 seconds. Bring it back & repeat until she has little, if any tension & is relaxed. Only then increase the length of the stick gradually & then, little by little, widen the area on her body. Go slowly, removing the stick (pressure) each time she relaxes. Do not introduce plastic until she is calm with just the stick & then make it a very small piece. I'm interested as to why your mare can 'blast through' a dually. Using a 30ft line I have controlled quite large horses, including ex racehorses & I'm a small, middle aged woman, just under 5ft tall. When the horse blasts away, let coils of line run from your hands, spread your feet & lean on your back foot. Let her run into to dually. She will quickly learn this is not her best option. Do not try to stop her leaving you. Let her go & the dually will do it's work if you stand your ground. Keep in touch & I'm sure others on the forum will offer us their insights. Good luck. Cheers, Jo.

Thanks Jo! Ok i will do more Join upps! Yes i can hold her with the Dually on the longline, I wasnt shure if it is ok to let her blast away. I will try a few days like you said with the stick, without plastik. I will let you know how it work out. Thanks

Hi Merle. Go to lessons, Montys demos. It's Lauki, an Icelandic pony so spooky his owner was considering putting him down. I think you need to watch this series several times as it is specifically relevant to your problems. My advice would be study what Monty does - his body language, how he reacts to the ponies reactions. There is good reason to believe you will have fantastic success with this mare if you follow Monty's lead. It's a leap of faith for some older horse trainers but keep an open mind & you will be amazed by what you can achieve. Whatever happens, remember we are all here to help & support you. Keep calm, be consistent & you will have success. Cheers, Jo.

Hi Jo! Thanks, I will do that. I did a good join up today and she just once blast away and I think the Dually worked (= After that she just circlet (?) around me with a slack in the line! I took just little steps with the stick and I got half way down the hindlegs. I will continue that next days if there wiki be no storm..
I am so glad to try writing in english for getting this help!
Thanks a lot!

Hi Merle. Well done. It's so rewarding, to work with your horse in this way. In just a few days you will have progressed so far! This thread will help you monitor your progress. Keep posting your experiences & we can support you & the mare. Remember, whenever your mare gets upset with the training, go back to a point where she was happily accepting the situation & rebuild from there. Each set back is a learning opportunity. Horses require us to be patient & understanding & in return they are generous. Cheers, Jo.

Hi Jo! The Snowstorm is gone and I could work again with the horses (= Today i got the best Join Up with her and could touch her allover her body with the stick. The hind legs are still spooky but she stands still. I also use it on another mare but I do something wrong because after the 3. Join Up she will still not join up...I get all 4 gestures and I can go to her but she will not follow me, just with her eys. But I will study and try again.

Hi Merle. You are doing great! This second mare - the one that won't follow you. Don't overly worry. I got one of the best results from a thoroubred gelding that only did half a join up but it was enough to change him completely! Fortunately, I saw the change in his eyes & reacted accordingly. Look in the archive for 'mostly untouched 4 year old'. It's not Apollo but Tommy I'm referring to. I was worried he might run me down in the round pen but no, he was a gent, except when he jumped out & ran away to his pal, Apollo & came back a horse with a totally different mind set. Yes, study the lessons- there is always room for improvement, but don't beat yourself up. Some horses are more open to humans than others. You need to keep working & getting better. You're on the learning curve. Keep trying & you will find enormous satisfaction in the results. Monty himself refers to learning new techniques even now - see him in ' reverse & reward' series, really emotional in the last episode! You are on a life journey, along with all of us on the Uni & those who follow Monty. Every day & every horse is a new challenge, some more than others, but each one brings it's reward. Good luck & keep posting so we can support you. Cheers, Jo.

I can also catch her in the field with other horses where i could not get near her before.
So thanks allot!
