Horse Behavior and Training

Step by step for a bucking horse

Please upload your photo

Does anyone have a 5 or 10 point system for a horse that bucks all riders off?
He has not been successfully ridden in 3, yes THREE years.

Needless to say that single line lounging did nothing helpful.

Obviously, we started with join-up, and then dually halter training.
What direction should we try now? Double line lounging?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi
It takes a long time to gentle a horse that has bucked people off. You need to watch the training videos that Monty has put together to get some idea of the process. When we take a two year old and start its training we will long line them for about 6 months and in the process start putting a saddle on when the horse is just standing getting groomed. We don't get serious about riding until the horse is three and then we start it in a hackamore. By the time we have the first ride in the round pen the horse has had a saddle on him and a hackamore as well. We sometimes will just lean overt the horse back or just sit on him for a while all before his first ride. By the time he has his first ride he is very use to the weight of a human as well as the feel.
I will say we have has a couple of colts that were difficult to handle until they were gelded.

Even thought Monty shows a horse that has never been ridden and in a day or so has the horse under saddle. Monty is an exceptional trainer and most people cannot active that kind of success. As usual patience and time are your best training methods.
Hope this helps

Cheers

Hi Dennis,

Can you tell me what a hackamore is? I can't find it in my Dutch/English dictionary.

Thank you, cheers.

A hackamore is the same as a bosal which is a woven rawhide nose piece that has a knot that is under the chin of the horse. The knot is there for weight only and should not be places is such a way ads to hit the horse under his chin. The hackamore works off pressure on the nose so it is a pressure release tool.
The spanish horseman start their horses with the hackamore/bosal and after the horse is ready for the bit, the hackamore/bosal is used along with the bit and slowly the bit takes over and the hackamore is removed. The horse is then considered a full up in the bridle horse.
The Old California and South American trainers have used this method for centuries priding themselves on producing gentle highly responsive horses of the highest level.

Cheers

Hi pfry,
-Did you have the back of your horse checked, is your tack 100% OK? There could be a reason in there for bucking.
-Longlining sounds like a good idea, building a lot of trust and confidence in your horse, you could use the longlines as longreins and train him from the ground, even sidepassing etc., let him become braver when he is being directed from behind.
-When he is totoally comfortable with that, you can put a dummy on his back.
-Even a buckstopper might come in place, but please do realise that it takes expert hands to have eccelent results.
-Read about this all in Monty's book "From my hands to yours" and try anything first on a lot of gentle horses.
-Bellying over in a well protected area, a rider that can sit out quite some bucking could be your next step, but take your time and stay safe.
Will you let us know how things go?
Miriam

You find the steps in Monty's book. First step is the basic join-up, touching the horse, follow-up and Dually training. Second step would be the double line lounging. Those horses often buck when they feel the rope on the back. Third step is the buck stopper with the horse free, long lining and with an artificial rider. The last step would be a real very experienced rider knowing Monty's technique. I agree with Dennis that this will take a lot of time. And we often forget that things that go well during Monty's demonstrations may not function at home.

Hi all
.
One of my mares used to be a bucker before I bought her and her bucking was purely caused by back pain. So its really important to have the horse checked for medical problems to make sure these are ruled out before continuing with training. My mare stopped completely after being properly aligned.
.
Hope it goes well, there is some great advice here.
.
Kind regards,
.

Thank you all for your help.
The book is on its way.
We know this 9 year old big boy is going to take 6 months or so before a rider stays on longer than 10 seconds.

We will keep you informed of his progress.
