The horse that side steps away, when approaching it at the shoulder.

Hi all,I have recently started training some new Cobs which at some point before my involvement, have had some work done on them, and i think that work has lapsed, and now they have become naughty, once caught with a head collar,i can pick up all four feet, with very little problem. My question is,On approaching the Horse in a safe confined area,it tends to turn away from me or walks backwards and forwards paralell to the sides, when trying to attach the head coller, this does get rather frustrating, its as if its doing it on purpose,is there a techniqe to resolve this issue, every time i try and put a head coller on.

Hi msillett7,
What happened to your horse before you stepped into its life, nobody can know for sure.
What it does as a reaction to your action, we can try to alter...
Don't catch your horse, let it catch you!
When you approach it in its paddock, be aware of where your eyes are focused.
Probably on its head...., maybe shoulders.
Now next time you enter the paddock, do a Join-Up with the horse, or at least send it away with eyes on eyes, shoulders square, a brisk walk etc, please watch the videos again here at the UNI. After your Join-Up, the horse will want to be with you for Follow-Up.
Here is the next stumble stone: Your eyes should never be focused on the horse's head, if you need to look its way, look behind its hindquarters, which would push the quarters away from you, meaning: the head towards you.
Please let us know how you're doing!
