Understanding behavioral modification

Hello!

I can see positive and negative reinforcement techniques in use during Join-Up and schooling with the Dually halter. I think having such techniques (and others) drawn out for discussion and illustration in videos would be so helpful for deepening one's understanding of what you are accomplishing with the horse. Having a working knowledge of the various techniques of behavioral modification should be fundamental to learning.

Hello!

I'm sure Monty will be including that in future lessons. It's something I teach in our classroom based courses in the UK. I think it might be a bit daunting to some people if you introduce it too early though!

Hello!

Kelly, thank you kindly for your comment. It is your books that motivated me to ask the question in the first place, so it is an understatement to say that I was surprised that you yourself answered on this forum. :)

I have another question about some of the Parelli techniques, as a friend has a trainer who is working with her horse and using some of them. I know nothing about Parelli, but the question is more of a behavioral modification question (I think). That is, what is happening when a person jiggles lines, chains, taps with a whip, shakes things, etc., to communicate to the horse to do something? I'm trying to understand if there is consistency with Monty's concept of the language of Equus, and these PP techniques. Finding the common thread of behavior modification seems one way to tease out the commonality... I think.

If there is a better forum than this Uni to have this kind of dialogue, can you suggest it? Being in California, your courses in the U.K. are a bit out of reach. Even Flag Is Up Farms is financially out of reach, which is why I was hoping these discussions could take place on this forum.

Thank you!
