Willy issues

Hello!

Hi all, i have concerns about my gelding dropping his willy out when ever I pat or brush him, I'm of 2 minds about this 1 is he is just so relaxed an enjoying his brush/pat or 2 that it could be dominance thing , any thoughts on this .. As I am a nervous person an would like to know if there could be a problem here ... Any advice will be appreciated .. Cheers Nik

Most geldings do this when they are relaxed which is associated with the brushing so I think you can relax. I doubt very much if it is associated with a dominance thing as they tend to keep it in if they are feeling aggressive or dominant as far as I know.

Hi. My Humphrey, now gelded but father of 3 foals, still drops out the 'old fella' when I scratch his rump. He's a real old fashioned cob, 13 hands, huge, crest to die for, a forelock that covers his nostrils, a chest wide enough for 4 front legs to fit in - you find him something to stand on & he'd pull the world round! So gentle & always has been. He takes mints from my hand with his lips. I've never seen any evidence of this behaviour & aggression so I am pretty sure your gelding is just loving the attention. Cheers, Jo.

Yep, agree with all, good sign of relaxtion OR wanting to urinate; definately nothing to do with "dominance".

One other thought guys - let's not be coy about body parts - it's a penis! Let's call things what they are especially in an international forum like this where English euphemisms may not be understood ;-)

Hi. Vicci, I agree with you but I could not be certain that Nik was adult so went along in the same vein to ensure I did not upset parents - alienation by being too forthright being unacceptable. Anyway, it made a more amusing thread. & by not sticking with 'willy' there was more chance our worldwide friends would work out what was being discussed - given there are a limited number of body parts a gelding can drop. Cheers, Jo.

Had to smile Vicci!! Too right on the correct words, it's only natural.
Hi Nikki, it's also part of trust if he's happy to drop whilst grooming. Watching my herd together when the geldings groom each other they all drop their penis, I've also seen clean each other's penis nibbling the dry urine off.
It's good that your gelding drops for you, much easier to clean and to remove the bean.

How do you clean it exactly? Cheers

Hi. Cleaning is done with a sponge & slightly soapy warm water. You can buy bespoke products but these are unnecessary. It's a case of gently wiping away the waste material. A sign that this procedure is overdue is often a creaking noise when the horse trots, known where I live as "having water in his wellies"! Cheers, Jo.

I used several big wads of cotton wool & warm water so you can throw it away, you can't get a sponge clean after.
If you use soapy water, make sure you rinse it away very well or you will cause soreness. I found just warm water was fine as you don't want to strip all the oils out.
Oh yes - wear vinyl gloves or your hands will stink!!!!!
